What is the treatment to cure toenail fungus?

April 15, 2013

Q: Some of my toenails are discolored. Is it some sort of fungus? What is the best way to treat it? It doesn't hurt; it just looks bad.

A: Fungal infection is the most common cause of toenail discoloration. This is usually treated by oral antifungal medications. The recommended regimen is fluconazole, 150mg every other day for 3 doses, followed by weekly fluconazole (150-200mg) for 3 months. This will cure it.

The possibility for the discoloration is a chronic low-grade bacterial infection. This is treated by soaking the affected nail/nails in an antiseptic solution or vinegar.

The antifungal medications would need a prescription for the treatment. You may meanwhile apply Betadine solution to the nail, twice a day, which is available over the counter.
