Preparing for the Holidays

By Jessica Klimczak on November 20, 2014

Whether you realize it or not, the holidays have arrived. With the impending arrival of friends and family it is important to make sure the festivities go off without a hitch. We checked in with a few of our Home Improvement Experts on the most important things you should check in your home before the festivities begin.

# 1: Check the batteries in your smoke alarm. You will most likely be cooking more in the few weeks than you do all year - make sure your smoke detectors are functioning properly to avoid potentially fire danger.

#2: Inspect your window seals. Checking your the seals on your doors and windows will help keep out the cold. You can hire a handyman to fix these but it is a rather easy DIY project that should only take a few hours.
#3: Change your filters on your air systems. If you have a forced air system, the filter will typically need to be changed once or twice a year to keep your heating, cooling and fan systems running smoothly. The last thing you want is everyone bundled in blankets around the Thanksgiving dinner table.

#4: Insulate your water pipes. Ensuring proper insulation on your water pipes will prevent freezing. Functioning pipes means no issues with running water throughout the house.
