Q: My cat weighs 30 pounds and needs to lose weight. What sort of diet would you recommend?

'Who you calling fat?'

A: In a situation like this, I would suggest the Science Diet brand of cat food and its prescribed diet. I have had the best success with this for weight loss in cats.

Getting them to lose weight is important for overall health reasons such as diabetes risk reduction, reduction of heart issues and joint issues. Weight loss is very difficult to achieve in cats, as the pure goal is more calories burned than eaten. It is hard to find a palatable diet that meets these needs.

The number of times per day for feeding can vary. I feel it works best to have two meals a day so that you can assess the amount of food being eaten.
