Acid reflux is a common and uncomfortable digestive condition that most people can manage through lifestyle changes and over-the-counter remedies.

Heartburn is a symptom that often comes with acid reflux, and it’s caused by stomach acid flowing back into the esophagus. When this happens frequently over a long period of time, doctors refer to the condition as gastrointestinal reflux disease (GERD). You can learn more with this GERD fact sheet from the Mayo Clinic.

Dr. Arun Phophalia, a surgeon and expert on JustAnswer, offered these basic steps that can help in treating acid reflux.

  1. Keep an antacid handy, like Maalox, for flare-ups.
  2. Take an acid blocker, like Prilosec, especially when you eat spicy foods.
  3. If you are overweight, try to shed some pounds.
  4. Avoid alcohol, citrus fruits and juices, chocolate, and tomato-based products.
  5. Do not eat large meals. Instead, eat five small meals in a day.
  6. Wait three hours after the last meal before you sleep.
  7. Elevate the head end of your bed by 8 inches.

If your acid reflux or heartburn symptoms persist, consult your doctor for treatment options. If you have further questions and need answers quickly, connect with a doctor on JustAnswer.
