Q: I live in Michigan, my son in Tennessee. We plan to buy a motorhome together to share. Since the vehicle will spend less than 6 months in each of our home states, can we legally set up an LLC in a third state to title and register it?
A: You can certainly set up an LLC and register the motorhome in any state you set up the LLC. It actually makes sense as you can choose a state that has minimal vehicle tax, limited fees for tags with no inspections. But please remember that you need to consider LLC registration fees as well.
This would also not be considered tax evasion, as long as it’s clear the vehicle isn’t in either state full-time and is owned by a company in another state.
Many RV sites list states where it is popular to register RVs. One such site recommends South Dakota, Texas, and Florida.
