Here at JustAnswer, we’re used to showing Experts, reporters and job candidates around our office, but recently we were thrilled to host a group of San Francisco high school girls for a tour. As part of an afterschool program in SOMA called SF Oasis for Girls, our guests were exploring what it's like to work at different bay area companies.
JustAnswer’s General Counsel and VP Emily Porter kicked things off with a taste of what working at a startup is all about: data! The young women were asked both their ages and what industry or field they wanted to be working in, and we put together a quick chart to show the breakdown of how many people were interested in which fields. Interestingly, the medical field had the largest showing, followed by the travel industry.
Next, the young women talked with a bunch of JustAnswer employees, from customer care representatives to analysts to copywriters to senior software engineers, about college, career paths and the people who had influenced us. Most fascinating was JustAnswer's own Penelope who worked for a stint helping rehabilitate inmates in San Quentin!
At the end of the day, several girls said they wanted to come back to volunteer (specifically to take care of the dogs in our dog-friendly office), and others spoke about how their perceptions of office life were changed drastically – they were impressed by the facilities, the nap room, our wall of candy, and the general happy disposition of everyone they met.
As for us at JustAnswer, it was heartwarming to see these young women full of spunk inspired by what we do, and we hope to get the opportunity to see them again soon!
