How much to fix a faulty synchronizer?

January 09, 2013

Q: I am considering buying a used car, 2003 Saturn L200 manual shift. It makes noise when shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear, but otherwise works fine when in gear. Is it the synchro or something else? What is the approximate cost to repair?

A: If the noise is only present when shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear, it is most likely a failing synchronizer. Not really too big a deal. If you do desire to fix the problem, expect to spend around $1,000 for parts and labor in total.

You'll want to figure this into the purchase price of the car when comparing to other cars.
