How can I stop my calf and thigh cramps?

July 15, 2013

Q: What can I do to get a cramp in my calf and thigh to subside? I'm a 74-year-old woman and can't get an appointment with my provider for another week. Is there something to give me relief?

A: The first thing you want to do is to STRETCH the affected muscles and massage them.

You might be deficient in potassium as a possible cause. As soon as possible I would recommend that you have your electrolytes checked!

You would also have probable benefit from a muscle relaxant. You may have benefit to obtain magnesium oxide over the counter today. Magnesium can help in the relaxation phase of muscles.

Today it may help to soak in a warm bath if you have ongoing pain from the cramps. I hope that these tips are helpful for you!
