An easy, homemade remedy to whiten teeth

September 19, 2013

Q: What are some good teeth whitening products that I can purchase at the drugstore? I want to whiten my teeth, but I'm not interested in getting them whitened at the dentist because I'm on a budget.

A: I often advise the following: Make a paste with some baking soda and a bit of hydrogen peroxide (3%) and pack that around your teeth all the way to the gums and in between teeth. Wait for about 3 minutes, and then brush as usual. Follow that with a warm salt-water rinse.

This is a very effective way to bleach, and is mild, so it will not cause any damage as some stronger bleaches do.  It will take a few weeks to notice, but you will if you are patient.

The salt-water rinse will freshen your breath as well as keep bacteria count low. The bonus is that the above is very low-cost as well.
