Q: My 3-year-old just ate a bunch of raw bacon. My husband thought the bacon in the fridge was ham and fed it to our son in a sandwich. What should I do?

A: This probably won’t hurt him. The main risk would be from potential food poisoning from bacterial contamination. Bacon is not highly susceptible to this if it’s fresh. Watch for signs of problems such as stomach ache, fever, diarrhea, or vomiting. If he should develop this type of illness, then he should be treated.

Most likely this will not occur. Bacon is usually cured or saturated with salt, which acts as a preservative. There is nothing to do but wait and watch at this point. If he develops no illness in 48 hours, then he is home free.
